Apple builds its hardware this way to encourage you to "upgrade" every two years. They started drinking their own Kool-aid after a while. Thanks, iPhone.

The problem is that Mac wants the money upfront. With a Windows DIY build you can get your self up and running for a fraction of the price and improve upon it as you went along.

You mean... Apple has been compounding hardware-design risks with "tweaks" in their OS, making their devices more likely to fail? Sounds like "user-inflicted damage" to me. smh

"The looks and status symbol of owning the machine" oh come on! So many of developers use it just because of one thing and that is a system. In our company and many more, the Mac OS is just preferred... You would be surprised how many web developers can only work on Mac and have Windows desktops only as a gaming platform.
Of course by this I am not saying there is not so many things to improve, I agree on better cooling that is needed and so on

7:30: The answer is that fun laptop computers use too much electricity and would give a battery life of 30 minutes in thin constructs. A greater asset for Apple is the A processors, so the laptops are in a mode of "well, alright, we need to get rid of the items from this failed project anyway... a few billions on the side won't hurt us."

Is there a TLDR version? I don't get what he was saying about heating. Why do Apple's heat more than PC's? Apple just isn't providing sufficient cooling?

The gist of it is that Apple values style and simplicity, which means sub-optimal cooling solutions.

As someone who actually designs hardware for a living, Apple do a very good job, but they drop the ball from time to time (like we all do).

If you chose wisely you can get performing machines that stay performant for a long time.

My 2010 macbook pro is still in use, and still better than some systems sold today.

My 2015 has been pretty much always on since the day of purchase, and is still rock solid.

One of the big reasons for me to keep using macbooks (alongside my other pcs) is that Apple nails the little details that make your life easier.

The custom battery packs and chargers that Apple use are unrivaled. Most competitors either outsource or use canned type solutions that end up with heavy reduction in battery life or needing a full replacement.

You might have a different opinion, but for me having a laptop with a CPU that *never* has to throttle, is an indication that the thermal solution is actually oversized, and I’m carrying way to much weight. On a Desktop? Yeah, keep your dies cool, but if I have pack it in a bag, you better have a good reason for the weight you are adding.

Agree with this 100%. I use all kinds of machines including gaming laptops that kick on their wind tunnels for menial tasks - though often this is due to poor thermal design. I frequently run into bad thermals across all makes and models on the laptop side. Dell, Razer, HP, etc. MSI has done well on their newest models.

The point about batteries is correct. Most PC laptops use some off the shelf parts somewhere and frequently compromise on the battery packs. These parts compromise the overall design of the laptop because the arrangement of the parts is often no optimal because the parts were not engineered for that specific machine but were instead built for an entire line so they could be easily swapped out to a large number of different machines.

Good products last longer, less likely to have the need to replace the item sooner.
Crappy made products fail quickly, so you need to replace to item sooner.
Apple is more about looks and status than doing a good value product.

Difference in philosophy is in my guess – THEY DESIGNED THE CHIP for the iPhone to fit it's design. They didn't design the intel CPU. Apple is one manufacturer of Apple machines, but there are many PC manufacturers and the difference is the software. So, I am not sure what you are comparing? Also, with Apple care, you have a three year machine. In our office, we always replaced our PCs every three years anyway because the technology changed so much.

Within the 3 years of apple care coverage, I had it repaired 2 times, and 3 months after apple care ran out... It was done. And that was a specced out, best I could get at the time iMac... However my iPhones I love, and I would never trade those in with anything else. Cuz those just, work...
