Just a quick question, couldn't you have coated it in dykem and then scribed through the pattern onto the guard instead of taping the paper to the guard?

4:50 Ooh yea, Will! Drill that hole in the beautiful chunk of Steele... Stick your file deep. (hope you won't get demonetized for it, as you know YT reviewers lack all sense of humor. Luckily you're viewers make up for that XD)

Question, whenever I see you guys forging, I don’t ever recall you using borax or any other flux on camera. Is it just a step that winds up on the cutting room floor? Or do you really find yourselves not using flux often. I’m not a A blacksmith in any way, I’ve just found myself on a kick of watching your videos for the last week or so, great content BTW. Most of the other blacksmith channels that I find myself watching always seem to show a step of sprinkling on Borax when forge welding… not that it specifically happened in this video. Just curious.

Then I scrolled into the comments where everyone has an opinion on a better way to do every step. For your sake, I hope I never get a reply… Keep up the good work.

I really dislike what I am going to say. I have been a subscriber for years, and love most of the videos. Well Alec, you have become a huge success on youtube. All due to the subscribers. You used to do many more videos when you were only 1 guy, now you divvy out videos to us like you were feeding us scraps. There are 2 of you now working on projects and there are long gaps in between videos, even when you say watch tomorrow, sometimes there is no tomorrow video. I'm sure there are many fans of your's who would agree that you do not put out near as many videos as you used to. Good Luck !!!

Would it be a dumb idea to use a laser engraver to etch the piece of steel instead of gluing a piece of paper to it? I would think then you could dip it in water to cool it down while working on it.

If it's not a blade made out of stainless steel, the best ways to preserve it is once you use it clean it immediately and make sure it's dry and then rub the blade down with some food grade oil like vegetable or Canola oil, oil will help prevent it from rusting

Try using some form of transfer paper to see if you can trace the design from the paper onto the piece you're working on.

You should get a laser etcher to etch patterns instead of using paper.

Another way to transfer the print to the steel blank would be to print on a laser printer (mirrored), place the printed paper on the steel piece (but print side facing the steel) and rub acetone on the back-side. The toner will transfer over to the steel and should make it quite visible. You could also use an iron (heat) to transfer the toner -or even iron-on transfer paper- but then the surface needs to be super flat before starting.

You’ll be able to see your design while grinding and it won’t burn paper. Good luck!

Alec, you should look into getting one of the cutters that people use for vinyl decals. If you could make your designs in vinyl then apply it to the steel, you'd be able to dip it into water to cool while grinding. It would also be very easy to cut out the exact shape seeing as its a computer program thats doing it
